These Self-Cleaning, Solar-Powered Robots Clean Solar Panels in Order to Absorb More Sunlight

These are Ecoppia robots, AI, and data-driven autonomous solar panel self-cleaning robots. Developed by Ecoppia, “a world-leader in robotic cleaning technology for photovoltaic solar sites,” they clean solar panels so they can absorb more sunlight and function at their peak performance year-round.

Like busy little worker bees, these completely autonomous robots move back and forth along vast solar panels during the night, removing dust, sand, soot, and debris with microfiber cloths and flowing air. This large-scale cleanup occurs without the use of water, human operators, or electricity. As a result, millions of gallons of water are saved.

To top that off, these efficient, eco-friendly robots are solar-powered. They have their own onboard dedicated solar module, which enables their batteries to rapidly charge in between operations. Therefore, these energy-dependent Ecoppia robots provide a genuinely sustainable approach to the operation and maintenance of solar modules.

Utilizing deep learning and advanced analytical tools, Ecoppia “translates data received from the PV site into actionable operational insights.” This data is then provided to the client through customized dashboards via top-notch cloud-based servers. So, an obstruction, for example, can be averted. Using an assortment of high-end sensors and smart data, the robots’ “health,” or status and behavior can be monitored to prevent potential malfunctions and disruptions in service.

Ideal for fixed-tilt, seasonal tilt, or single-axis tracker installations, Ecoppia robots are tested to withstand harsh environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, high winds, massive soiling, and lightning. Designated and authorized users can remotely initiate or cancel a cleaning. Additionally, alerts and notifications on out-of-the-ordinary behavior are received in real-time, so they can be remotely fixed.

Rain alone cannot remove the dirt and debris that become stuck onto solar panels when it cools at night and attracts morning dew. To further complicate matters, naturally dry and dusty locations, such as California’s Central Valley have more dust accumulation, which can escalate cleaning costs. That’s where these cleaning robots come in and are especially effective. Currently, there are 30 large-scale solar panels across the world – from Chile to India that are participating in these cost-effective green tech solutions.
