These Gigantic Steel Cables Are the Industrial Beasts That Support Massive Weight on Oil and Gas Rigs
The world’s most heavy-duty Herculean steel cables that support massive amounts of weight make the operation of offshore oil and gas rigs possible. To further ensure their tremendous strength, six individual cables are twisted around a core wire with a powerful machine, which ensures enormous strength and high tolerance to excessive tension.
This “assembly of steel strands” is called a cable-laid rope. The core wire serves as robust support and aids in evading contact between the strands when the rope is loaded. To further extend the life of these ropes, they are coated with lubricant and anti-corrosion solution. The cable-laid rope is used for the production of cable-laid slings, which are primarily used in the offshore heavy lifting industry across the globe. In other words, these are like mammoth nautical ropes, but on a much grander scale, and are made of steel and weigh tons more!
The maker of these industrial beasts is a privately owned Dutch company named United Offshore Services. By collaborating with top-quality partners, it makes, tests and approves, and certifies these gigantic steel cables. Since its inception in 1993, United Offshore Services has become a pioneer in European technology for the “design, production, and supply of large diameter, high-performance steel-wire and synthetic ropes, hoisting equipment, and associated products intended for the marine, industrial, and offshore markets.”
Based in Moerdijk, The Netherlands, just 30km south of Rotterdam (Euro Port) and 60km north of Antwerp (Belgium), United Offshore Services utilizes local deep-water harbor facilities for loading/discharging of barges and other sea-going vessels. This increasingly industrial area is an ideal location for managing heavy lifting equipment, etc.
Additionally, United Offshore Services specializes in cable-laid grommets which are slings that form a continuous loop and are super-durable. The company’s high-tech grommet machine can make a solid loop with a circumference of up to 300 meters. The company reportedly set a new world record for the ‘thickest’ rope with a diameter of 420mm! These Dutch industrial pioneers can produce grommets with a breaking strength of up to a monstrous 7,000 tons! Plus, the ropes created on the grommet machine can weigh around 70 tons!
