This Chain-less Bike Is an Engineering Marvel That’s Shifting Gears in the Cycling Industry

This is CeramicSpeed, a cutting-edge chain-less bike that transmits power to its wheels through a groundbreaking, 99% efficient, multi-speed drivetrain concept, called Driven, that eliminates the need for both the complex front and rear derailleurs as well as the chain.

In standard bikes, a ‘drivetrain’ consists of all the parts that you use to push (or pull) the bike along, including the pedals, cranks, chainrings, chain, cogs (cassette), and a derailleur. A derailleur is “a variable-ratio bicycle gearing system” that consists of a chain, multiple sprockets of different sizes, and a mechanism from which to move the chain.

CeramicSpeed teamed up with the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Colorado to develop a drive shaft concept that has taken the cycling industry to a new level as “the world’s most efficient drivetrain.”

Driven creates 49% less friction – when rivaled against the market-leading chain and derailleur drivetrain. To put this into perspective, a conventional chain and derailleur drivetrain contain eight points of sliding friction. These eight points are “generated from the articulation of the chain at these points.” CeramicSpeed’s novel Driven concept remarkably eliminates all eight points of sliding friction.

In order to accomplish a stellar performance, Driven uses CeramicSpeed Bearings in a pinion-style drive shaft system. The key components that make this system functional and efficient are its 21 CeramicSpeed Bearings. They have exceptionally low rolling friction and are long-lasting. Plus, the bearings transfer torque from the front ring through the drive shaft, then onto the 13-speed rear cog.

There has been a lot of buzz and criticism surrounding CeramicSpeed’s low-friction shaft drivetrain design, Driven since its prototype was revealed back in 2018. At the time, it was indeed a radical design. While it did hit its “aggressive primary goal of achieving 99% drivetrain efficiency,” the 2018 model didn’t shift gears. So, the engineering team had to confront this challenge head-on, and they made it happen!
